Music is an art and food for the soul. Supposedly something people could relate their feelings to. Over time there has been a great transformation in music which includes; changes in the style of composition, sound, and production.
Today's music differs from olden days music in a number of ways and as a result of many other factors. Below are some points to draw the difference between today's music and olden days music.
Difference between today's music and olden days music
Genre:
In the olden days, there was a specific genre of music. However, in today's music, it is quite difficult to identify the genre because different musicians combine different genres of music. For example, in the olden days, Michael Jackson was known specifically to be a pop singer but in today's music musicians merge different genre
Use of instruments:
In today's music, we now have more sophisticated ways of producing music but less original as compared to the olden days as a result of technology. The instruments used back then were: Cello, Viola, Tuba, French Horn, Bassoon, Trombone, Trumpet, Harmonica, Sitar, and many more. The old musicians crucially learned to play the instruments before composing any music.
In contrast, today's music normally depends on computer programs that have made things easier by downloading software and merging sounds together to make music. As a result that today's music does not sound original. Too many autotune and artificial sounds have removed the originality that comes with playing the normal musical instruments that exist.
Music quality:
In the olden days, the quality of music was not that good, because of the lack of improvement of the music systems and instruments. The sound quality was poor because the methods used were more traditional than classic.
But in today's music, the quality has greatly improved because of better sounds and instruments. The music world is greatly improving in quality as technology keeps changing and becoming more sophisticated. Sound now goes through processes which are easier but yet way better.
Lyrical meaning:
Lyrics used in the olden days were very insiteful and could fit into different emotions that one may be in. In other words it could be related to the moods we find ourselves in. These lyrics could help people find strength in themselves because lyrics that were meaningful
Whereas, lyrics in today's music are virtually meaningless. Lots of songs today are filled with offensive and hateful words, hardly matching relevantly to any mood but just the vibes that come with it.
Mode of production:
Music production in the olden days was time and skill-intensive. Vocalists and instrumentalists practiced for a long period to get the desired sound and melody. All sounds that were made directly from the instruments and were recorded
However, the narrative has changed in today's music. The emergence of technology has changed the mode of production. There are many computer programs and software which are now being used to make music. Most of them require the merging of two or more sounds together to produce music. Instrumentals are no longer necessarily played and recorded as it was then compulsorily in the olden days. Voices are being autotuned; the originality now deteriorates and fades away
